Medicare 101

Understanding Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions.

Understanding the different parts of Medicare can help you choose coverage that best fits your healthcare needs and budget.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Medicare Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, durable medical equipment, and other medically necessary services.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and combine Part A and Part B benefits. Many plans also include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits.

Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)Part D plans help cover the cost of prescription medications and are available through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement plans help pay certain out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Enrollment Periods

Understanding when you can enroll in Medicare is important to avoid penalties and ensure you have coverage when you need it.
